Dinosaur sheets have a specific trap: the plates, spikes and scale texture look printable on screen but turn to mush on the wrong settings. Three fixes.
The dense sheets — the pterodactyl wings, the jungle scene — pack a lot of ink into a small area, and standard 20lb copy paper buckles and bleeds under water-based markers. 65lb cardstock costs a few cents more and holds marker and gel pen without ghosting onto the table.
Greyscale mode renders a stegosaurus's plates as soft grey blocks that a child then has to colour over — and it burns colour ink on a page with no colour in it. Choose black-and-white or "black ink only" so the outlines stay crisp and the plates read as separate regions.
The ages-9+ sheets have fine spikes and overlapping ferns. Printed small they collapse into a grey tangle. Keep scaling on "fit to page" rather than printing two-to-a-sheet, and the dense detail stays colourable instead of becoming decoration.
Age ranges on coloring sheets are mostly guesswork. What actually predicts whether a child enjoys a page is the size of the enclosed white areas and how many of them there are — and dinosaurs span the full range, from a chunky T-rex to a spike-covered scene.
A single smiling T-rex or a cracked egg with a hatchling: four or five big areas. A toddler is still building the wrist control to stay inside a line, and a plated stegosaurus with thirty small regions reads as failure rather than fun. The bold body outline gives a clear target.
Triceratops horns and frill, stegosaurus plates, a long-neck reaching into trees. Enough distinct regions to make choosing colours interesting, without the fine spike-work that makes small hands give up. This is where dinosaur fans stay longest.
The pterodactyl's textured wings and the full prehistoric scene. The appeal is the same as adult coloring books: repetitive, absorbing fine work — filling one fern frond at a time — that is calming precisely because it takes a while.
If you are printing for a group with mixed ages, print a range rather than one design at several sizes. Children compare pages, and a younger child handed a visibly simpler sheet notices. A different subject at a different difficulty avoids that entirely.
This is the one subject where the usual "colour it realistically" advice falls apart, and that is a gift. For most dinosaurs, science genuinely does not know the colour — soft tissue rarely fossilises, and only a handful of species have left pigment clues in preserved feathers. A child colouring a T-rex teal is not making a mistake. They are making a hypothesis that is, strictly, as valid as anyone's.
